Dr. John Michael Mehaffey joined the faculty of the Department of Agriculture in the fall of 2012. His main teaching responsibilities are Introductory Animal Science, Reproductive Physiology, Animal Breeding, Livestock Evaluation, and Swine Production. He is the manager of the Swine and Sheep & Goat Centers focusing on show pig genetics and utilization within the classroom. Mehaffey also serves as the faculty advisor for Alpha Gamma Rho and is the coordinator of the Livestock Judging Program.
Dr. Mehaffey was a traveling student, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Poultry Science from Texas A&M University, a Master of Science degree in Poultry Processing from the University of Arkansas, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Texas Tech University in Meat Science. Dr. Mehaffey worked for Pilgrim’s/JBS for two years in Greeley, Colorado as a Food Technologist in National Accounts and before coming to Stephen F. Austin had a seven month stent with Colorado Premium Foods as their Research & Development Manager. While in the industry he worked with companies such as Whataburger, Dairy Queen, Arby’s, Wendy’s, Hormel, Safeway, Brinker International, Ruby Tuesday, and several others.
Dr. Mehaffey brings a lot of life experience to his position. He has worked extensively with the improvement of his families Hereford cattle, Cutting Edge Cattle Company and Animal Nutrition, both genetically and in the show ring. Being raised by a teacher and a veterinarian, he has vast knowledge of how to work with students and animals. Dr. Mehaffey has first-hand experience with breeding and raising animals from hedgehogs and emus to cattle and hogs. His goal is to use this experience to teach the students the techniques and knowledge necessary to have a healthy and genetically sound herd of their own.
The experience Dr. Mehaffey carries from the meat industry, life experience, and contacts gained throughout will help aid in building a successful undergraduate program for students at SFA with career opportunities in the Food and Livestock Industry throughout the world.
